Nadeem Shaikh earns by painting with his foot
Nadeem Shaikh, aged 20, was physically challenged by birth; he had no hands. He now resides in Jogeshwari, But his physical limitation didn’t stop him from living his dreams of being a painter.
Nadeem who studied in SEC Day School, Worli, developed his interest in painting while the school introduced the subject along with swimming, dancing and singing. In 2007, he joined IMFPA (Indian Mouth & Foot Painting Artists), an international society of disabled artists. Since then, Nadeem has won about 18 international awards in different competitions and events. His most favourite being portrait painting, he says, “My speciality is abstract and landscape painting. But there are more than 15 types of painting and I wish to learn all of them.”
Nadeem who likes to call himself independent can swim, operate a computer, mobile phone and even do namaz without anybody’s assistance. He says, “I earn about five to six thousand through IMFPA. But I want people to sponsor my paintings and I also wish to teach in schools and other institutions as an art trainer, so I can earn my livelihood.”
To fulfill his need for sponsorship, Nadeem’s friend, Mohammad Azhar, 22, a TYBA student, created a website and YouTube channel to showcase Nadeem’s talent to the world.
Nadeem believes that if one wants to achieve their dream, and have the passion for it, success is definite.
